Thousands of workers from Portugal’s recently privatised postal service CTT walked out of their job and into the streets Friday, February 23, to demand renationalisation of the post.
The strike, organised by the four unions representing CTT employees, seeks to defend the quality of universal postal service and the quality of postal jobs.
“UNI stands in solidarity with the striking workers in Portugal, and supports their demands to renationalise post. We believe that all people should have quality, universal postal service, and privatisation puts shareholders and profits ahead of investment in services,” said Cornelia Broos, Head of UNI Post and Logistics.
The CTT has announced plans to lay off hundreds of workers and close nearly two-dozen post branches, leaving many in Portugal poorly served and increasing the workloads for employees.
The strike, which took place in Lisbon, was called by SNTCT, SINDETELCO, SINCOR, and SINTTAV. It was supported by the CTT Workers Committee. On the nightshift, the unions report that more than 70 percent of workers participated in the strike.
Workers also went on strike in December 2017, in the days immediately before Christmas.
