Tens of thousands of workers mobilise today against cuts to pensions, health services and workers’ purchasing power.
In line with the EU’s renewed austerity agenda, Belgium’s new government—dubbed “Arizona”—intends to cut billions of euros in pensions, health services and workers’ purchasing power.
In a move that will hurt services workers in particular, the Arizona coalition wants to reduce the remuneration for night work. Many of these workers, from cleaners to retail staff to security personnel, rely on fair compensation for night shifts to make ends meet. Devaluing their work not only threatens their livelihoods but also risks worsening working conditions and staff shortages in essential sectors.
That’s why today, a united front of Belgian trade unions is mobilising for a national demonstration in Brussels to defend public services, social security and the purchasing power of workers.
UNI Europa fully supports the unions in their fight for fair pay, decent working conditions and strong public services. We stand with all workers mobilising to defend their rights and livelihoods.
