Our fight has been long in the making!

Our fight has been long in the making!

Before #MeToo, before #Niunamenos, UNI Women were fighting back. Before violence against women became daily news in the media, before thousands of workers in the #googlewalkout left their workplaces to protest against sexual harassment, UNI women were fighting back. Our fight has been long in the making!

Since the early 2000s, UNI Global Union, through its UNI Equal Opportunities Department has undertaken actions to raise awareness on the impact of violence, particularly against women. With the launch in 2009 of the Breaking the Circle campaign, UNI Equal Opportunities, the fight against violence became more visible. From discussing where the violence arises, to the different types of violence, UNI has been at the forefront of women’s issues, particularly on violence against women.

For this reason, and on the occasion of International Woman’s Day on Friday 8th of March, we wish to highlight the work that has been a long time in the making. Work that has contributed not only to raise awareness on the issue, but that has allowed us to dream bigger, to aim towards an ILO Convention for the elimination of all forms of violence in the workplace.

This 8th of March we want to highlight the work of all our UNI Women who were fighting back long before harassment and sexual harassment became topics in the evening news. We want to highlight their work, their passion and show that unions are key to creating more equal and just societies for all.
