UNI calls for protection of vital European legislation on human rights & the environment

UNI Global Union has joined 160 trade unions, NGOs and civil society organizations to demand the European Union safeguard legislation that protects human rights, the environment and the climate.

In November 2024, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans for an Omnibus law to reduce the reporting requirements for businesses concerning three key pillars of the European Green Deal: the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Taxonomy Regulation, which encourages green investment.

However, UNI shares grave concerns that the Omnibus regulation will undermine these landmark laws that hold corporations to account.

Christy Hoffman, UNI Global Union General Secretary, said:

“The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) ensures that businesses uphold workers’ rights throughout their operations and supply chains. Undermining it, and the other pillars of the European Green Deal, under the guise of reducing red tape jeopardizes human rights, decent working conditions and the environment. At a time when inequality is deepening and democracy is under attack, the European Union must be bold, stand firm and not risk these hard-won laws being watered down.”
