Leaked documents indicate that the European Commission is moving to put the implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive on ice. The leaked work programme questions whether “autumn will really be the right time for this proposal. UNI Europa has sent a letter to European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, outlining the importance of setting a new normal after the crisis, in which strong measures are taken to address the persistent gender pay gap.
“Action to secure equal pay cannot be called into question. Equal pay is a requirement of the EU Treaty, it is not a fair-weather option. There is a strong interconnection between a need to create a new normal after Covid-19 and guaranteeing equal and fair pay. In many of those sectors where women predominantly work, key workers are unfairly underpaid and undervalued,” states the letter.
UNI Europa affiliated unions in Spain, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Finland, Denmark and Ireland have joined the call by sending similar letters to Commissioner Dalli. A one day joint action with the European Trade Union Confederation and other European trade union federations is in preparation.
