Youth structures in European trade union federations

The attached Background and News article will be published in the November 2015 issue of Transfer (Vol. 21, issue 4), the European Trade Union Institute publication.

The article provides a brief overview of the existing structures for organising and representing young workers in six European trade union federations (ETUFs).

Recently, trade union youth structures have stepped up their efforts, to promote the interests and needs of young workers.

The reinforcement of existing youth trade union structures or the establishment of new ones have principally two motives. First of all, the increased prominence of those youth structures
should be seen in light of the widespread growth in youth unemployment in Europe and European Commission initiatives, such as the Youth Guarantee, to tackle this problem. Secondly,
there seems to be a rising awareness within the ETUFs about the need to increase union membership, particularly among young workers, who are frequently employed on non-standard, often precarious employment contracts.
