This landmark agreement highlights the urgent need to create safer workplaces, with a focus on gender-based violence and its impact on workers’ wellbeing.
One in three women in the world is subjected to some form of violence, whether physical, sexual or psychological. The violence and harassment affect their victims in their private lives but also at work. Through the joint statement, the social partners aim to address just this and shape the sector’s future policies.
Inditex is a leading company in the textile sector and the parent company of high street fashion chains such as Zara, Pull and Bear, Massimo Dutti among others and has a presence across the EU. It employs 125,792 people, of whom 95,891 are women.
The European Works Council brings together workers representatives from across the company’s operations as a channel to enhance collaboration with management at a regional level.
“We welcome the Joint Statement signed by the European Works Council and Inditex Group on violence and harassment. It shows the commitment to work towards a safer and more inclusive workplace for everyone,” said Oliver Roethig, Regional Secretary of UNI Europa.
Following on this commitment, in January 2025 the European Social Partners for the Commerce Sector will also convene a working group under the European Sector Social Dialogue framework to draft a joint statement on violence and harassment.
