UNI Global Union’s statement on the situation in Bangladesh

UNI Global Union has observed the unfolding situation in Bangladesh with increasing alarm and concern. We are in contact with our affiliates and our priority is the safety and wellbeing of workers and their families.

We condemn the brutal response of the previous Government to the legitimate calls of the people for change,” says Rajendra Acharya, UNI Global Union Regional Secretary for Asia and Pacific. “We expect those responsible for the violence and deaths of many hundreds of demonstrators to be held accountable for their actions. There must be full and independent investigations into the killings, with justice for the bereaved families.”

The protection and safety of peaceful demonstrators must be guaranteed, with full respect for the civil liberties of the Bangladeshi people in accordance with international human rights and labour standards obligations.

Employers must fulfill their responsibilities to their workers.  Salaries must be paid and the health and safety of workers, including the practical issues of travelling to and from places of work, safeguarded,” said Alke Boessiger, UNI Global Union’s Deputy General Secretary. “This is an extremely worrying time, but there is hope for a future Bangladesh where workers rights are protected and trade unions respected.  We will continue to provide support and solidarity to our affiliates and will work with them in their efforts to build a peaceful, democratic and better future for Bangladesh.”

UNI Global Union calls for those forming a new Government in Bangladesh to actively engage with trade unions. Their voice is crucial in the process of reform and rebuilding that is needed.
