On Saturday night, a neofascist group took advantage of an anti-vaccine-certificate protest to attack the CGIL headquarters and landmark of trade unionism in Rome, Italy. The CGIL reacted firmly by staging a snap mobilisation outside the building on Sunday morning where they announced a major pro democracy rally next weekend. Trade unions across Europe reacted in solidarity, backing the CGIL’s rejection of fascism. UNI Europa sent a letter on behalf of services sector workers’ unions across the continent.
“Whenever fascism raises its head, trade unions are one of the first targets, because the collective of workers are guarantors of democracy, freedom and justice. History will not repeat itself. 2021 is not 1922. We will not be intimidated. This attack only strengthens our determination to push back united and fight the enemies of democracy – in Italy, Europe and worldwide; at the workplace, in politics and in elections.”
History will not repeat itself. 2021 is not 1922. We will not be intimidated.
I will be in Rome to stand shoulder to shoulder with our sisters & brothers in Italy who stand tall in defense of democracy.#SIAMOTUTTICGIL #Maipiùfascismi #AlwaysAntifascisthttps://t.co/DLGYhxT7L6
